This is not the first time the corrupt national GOP power structure and the Mississippi Republican Party have betrayed conservatism.

By now, the deeply questionable practices of the Thad Cochran campaign and his apparatchiks in Mississippi are known to all. Mysterious robo-calls, unaccounted for mailings, street money, all designed to not just to defeat but ruin Chris McDaniel, because he had the temerity to take on the Establishment.

The anti-conservative forces inside the GOP even engaged and paid Democratic consultants to help destroy the campaign of a fellow Republican.

Let that sentence settle in for a second.

The conservative Reaganites are consoling themselves that now the only way the Establishment can beat them is by deceit. It should be noted these conservatives have been willing to go out in public to discuss the race even though they lost. Meanwhile, as like cockroaches, the Cochran forces and the national Republicans have made themselves scarce in the bright light of day.

Not that these operatives really mind having their ethics impugned. For many in the Republican consulting classes, they wear such titles as a badge of honor. Winning at all costs and who picks up the tab at lunch is are all that matters. Principles? Are you for real?

Still, there will probably be no investigation and this won’t be the first time Mississippi has swept crime under the rug.

Remember when the national GOP proudly trumpeted a blueprint for reform? Screwtape, say hello to the National Republican Senatorial Committee. The NRSC bears special mention, as it has taken on a Lord of the Flies culture of mean little boy savagery and decadence. They stuck their noses in the Nebraska primary and got their heads handed to them.

They stuck their noses into Oregon and came up with the worst possible candidate, an alleged man stalker, pro-abortion, pro-Obamacare nominee. Oh what a tangled Wehby they weave.

And now Mississippi, where the money they legitimately raised for Cochran may have gone for all sorts of nefarious activities to destroy the Reaganite Tea Party candidate McDaniel challenging Cochran, K Street’s favorite senator.

Still, this isn’t the first time the Mississippi Republicans and the national GOP have betrayed conservatism. In 1976, Ronald Reagan was making a revolutionary challenge to Gerald Ford, America’s only unelected president. Ford had come to the presidency courtesy of the 25th Amendment because of the resignations of Spiro Agnew and Richard Nixon. He truly was an “accidental president.”

As he’d never been nominated, Ford had no more claim on the leadership of the GOP than did Bozo the Clown. (Which is what the national press often called Ford because of his star-crossed presidency and frequent personal pratfalls and jumbled syntax.)

The state party Chairman was Clarke Reed, the “Mr. Republican” of the South. Reed proclaimed himself to be a conservative but supported Nixon over Reagan in 1968, though in 1976 had promised Reagan that he would deliver all 30 of Mississippi’s delegate votes to Reagan at the convention in Kansas City.

Reed stipulated even further that Reagan could count on him if the race was competitive. How competitive?

The 1976 convention in Kansas City was the first time (and the last time) since 1952 that delegates had gathered without first knowing who their nominee would be.

But Reed was also attracted to the baubles of power and access and Ford, even an unintended president, still had 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and Air Force One and invitations to state dinners to tempt weak-willed and easily susceptible party delegates and so called leaders. The trouble for Reagan was that Reed was a sunshine conservative, never there for the really tough fights, and Reagan only had his ideas and principles to offer.

In August in Kansas City, at a time when Reagan needed those 30 Mississippi delegates for a procedural vote that all knew was a test balloting for the nomination, Reed bailed on Reagan at the 11th hour, betraying him, giving his 30 votes to Ford. And as a direct result, it was Ford and not Reagan who won the nomination.

Reed was not a bad man, just a very weak one. To his misfortune, Clarke’s legacy in American politics will not be his hard work in building the GOP in the South, but his betrayal of Reagan for what was the modern equivalent of 30 pieces of silver.

As a point of historical fact, it is necessary given the current controversy to point out that Reed’s young aide in 1976 was Haley Barbour; though he was by accounts a nominal Reagan supporter, he chose John Connolly over Reagan in 1980.

The past has again become prologue and for the ethical Tea Party Reaganites, they have but two choices: adopt the unethical tactics of the Establishment or expand the conservative base by expanding the message.

Honor dictates the answer.

Thad Cochran Wins Democrat Nomination in Mississippi!

Last night in a hard fought Mississippi run off election Thad Cochran won the Democrat Nomination for the Republican Senate Seat in that state.

I had the chance to speak with Senator Cochran shortly after he was notified of his win.

“Senator, How do you feel tonight after your successful bid for the nomination?”

Cochran:  “Nomination? For What?”

“Well Sir… you just won the Nomination for…”

Cochran:  “Maybe YOU can tell me Mary!”

“Sir, my name is Mike.  I’m with makeaneffort and I’m here to…”

Cochran:  “Okay Steve, you tell me then.  There is poop in my pants!”

“Sir?”

Cochran: “There’s poop in my pants son.  Who did it?”

“Senator, I don’t think…”

Cochran: “I don’t care what you think!  I want to know who did this in my pants!”

“Um… congratulations on your win Sir.”

Cochran: “I heard the Blacks voted for me once.  Blacks!  I wonder if they pooped my pants? You have a funny look on your face Larry… did YOU poop in my pants?”

“No Senator, I did not.  And indeed there was a huge number of Democrats who voted for you which is why you won the Republican Nomination for the Mississippi Senate Seat.  Democrats of every color.  Some say they made up almost 30% or more of your votes.”

Cochran:  “You talk too much, but I like you!

“Thank you Senator, but how do you feel about winning with Democrat votes?”

Cochran: “I’m going to name a school after you Mike!”

“Well Sir, that would be kind but I don’t think I need to have a…”

Cochran:  “Not you Jerry, that woman behind you.”

“Of course.  Sorry for being presumptive.  Sir, do you see why the American people see no difference between the parties when Democrats choose the Republican Nominees for Senate Seats?”

Cochran: “Are we finished here?  I have something in my pants.”

“Yes Sir, thank you for your time.”

Cochran – off mic:  “Karl, Karl!  Did YOU put something in my pants!?”

Rove – off mic:  “…unintelligible… calm down Thad.  Come with me to the bathroom then we’ll go get some Ice Cream.  Does that sound nice?”

Cochran – walking away: “I like strawberry.  Will they have strawberry?  What stinks?”

An Inside Look at what’s Wrong with DC Republicans

I rarely do this, but this struck me as needing a full repost.
It’s from Breitbart’s Matthew Boyle. If you don’t visit Breitbart on a regular basis you are missing an extremely valuable resource.

Senator Thad Cochran is the poster child for Establishment Republicans.  He is facing a serious run-off challenge by Chris McDaniel in Mississippi.  It’s worth noting that Cochran did not want to run, but was talked into it by Establishment Republicans when it became evident that a “TEA Party Type” would most likely take the seat if he didn’t.

This would, on the heels of the Cantor Primary Loss to Dave Brat, be another very big win for TEA Party Sentiment.

GOP Senators Scurry from NRSC HQ After McConnell’s ‘All In’ for Thad Cochran Fundraiser

by Matthew Boyle 11 Jun 2014, 11:44 AM PDT 283

A dozen or so senior GOP senators gathered with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell at the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) headquarters to raise funds for Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) on Tuesday evening.

Noteably, none of them seemed too proud of it, based on how quickly they scurried away from the building—some outright declining to offer even a simple word of praise for Cochran—when asked why they were there.

The fundraiser—a last dash from the GOP establishment and McConnell, who is “all in” to save Cochran from his conservative primary challenger, state Sen. Chris McDaniel—occurred just hours before conservative Dave Brat crushed House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a primary for his Virginia House seat, delivering the biggest-ever blow the Tea Party has delivered to a sitting GOP incumbent.

Senators who gathered to offer financial support for Cochran included Cochran’s Mississippi colleague Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AL), Rob Portman (R-OH), Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), John Barrasso (R-WY), John Thune (R-SD), John Cornyn (R-TX), Bob Corker (R-TN), Susan Collins (R-ME), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Dean Heller (R-NV), Richard Shelby (R-AL), and McConnell (R-KY).

Cochran himself didn’t even show up for the fundraiser.

A Republican staffer told Breitbart News the mood inside the room—in which both Wicker and McConnell spoke—was somber. There was “a lot of looking at shoes,” the staffer said, and “a lot of people anxious to get out the door.” When Wicker and McConnell spoke, the staffer said, “what they didn’t say was stunning.”

“Thad’s name was only mentioned once,” the staffer said, and there was “no talk of what he had done, or what he would do… The silence was deafening.”

Around 6:20 p.m., a different fundraiser attendee walked outside to sarcastically inform another who was just arriving: “You’re missing all the great speechifying in there.”

NRSC spokesman Brad Dayspring hasn’t responded to a request for comment about what happened at the fundraiser.

The GOP senators seemed to be perfunctorily performing their duties of allegiance to McConnell rather than actually putting their name on the embattled Cochran’s struggling re-election campaign.

Murkowski, for instance—a senator who faced her own Tea Party defeat in 2010 at the hands of Joe Miller but ran as an independent and kept her seat—outright declined to comment on why she’s financially supporting Cochran. “I’m getting to the airport right now to pick up my nephew who’s ten years old,” Murkowski said, when asked by Breitbart News for a quote on why she’s helping Cochran, while she hustled down the Second Street sidewalk.

Thune, a member of Senate GOP leadership as the GOP conference chairman, also declined a quote when asked by Breitbart News outside the NRSC building why he’s supporting Cochran. “Well, we’re late to the next event, so thanks,” Thune said as he hopped into the front seat of a black car.

Portman, who hurried down the sidewalk away from the NRSC building when he left the fundraiser at around 6:40 p.m., with a camouflage baseball hat pulled low making it difficult to see his face, told Breitbart News he is supporting Cochran because he’s an incumbent.

“I am [supporting Cochran],” Portman said while hustling up Second Street Northeast toward a car that was set to pick up himself and a staffer. “I’m the vice chair of the NRSC. We are supporting all our incumbents, including Sen. Cochran.”

When asked if he agrees with Cochran’s claim that McDaniel is an “extremist” who would be “dangerous” if elected, Portman demurred. “I didn’t see what he said, so I don’t want to comment on it,” Portman said. “But Thad’s a friend and he’s a colleague and he’s a good conservative and he’s been great for Mississippi.”

While Shelby got away before this reporter could ask him why he’s supporting Cochran, he could be overheard telling another fundraiser attendee as he walked out the door: “I told them I delivered my money for him.” It’s unclear what the context of that statement was.

Ayotte similarly got away before this reporter got to her, but another fundraiser attendee mentioned how she had her own campaign event later Tuesday evening, and she shrugged back jokingly with a smile on the NRSC’s front steps: “Here to support Thad!”

When Alexander, who faces a similar primary challenge from Tennessee state Rep. Joe Carr, was asked why he’s supporting Cochran, he told Breitbart News as he hopped in a car outside the NRSC building: “Because he’s one of the finest senators we have in the United States Senate.”

Barrasso, who barrelled toward a car with a faster-than-normal gait on his way outside, said he’s supporting Cochran “because he’s an outstanding conservative senator and voice for the people of his home state.”

And when this reporter walked up to approach Corker as he was leaving the building, he got a cell phone call, then walked down Second Street away from the Capitol to hop in a gray SUV that met him there.

Finally, Drew Brandewie from Senator John Cornyn’s office furnished a quote from the Senator for this story: “Senator Cochran has been a tireless advocate for the people of Mississippi who has voted to oppose, defund, or repeal Obamacare over 100 times.”

The McConnell fundraiser email invitation—which the Minority Leader signed—was much more enthusiastic in its support for Cochran than any of the GOP senators who showed up. “Our friend Thad is in a battle in the coming weeks that will have a very real impact on our fight for the Majority. You have helped all of us in the past, and we need your help for him now,” the email read, according to Politico. “It is critical that he has financial resources now, and we are going to make sure he has them.”
