Spydenfreude

Riddle me this…

You lived in a world were Privacy was Paramount but it was interrupted by a loud hacking from inside your mind. Outrage ensued falling on deaf ears.

Who are you?

The American People?

Ha! No…

Did you guess the Democrat led Senate Intelligence Committee? Well you’d be right! Well done.

For those of you who guessed the American People you’re only half right as apparently we should not be outraged but instead consoled that the Intelligence Service we pay for spends the majority of its time searching our computers and passing around naked pictures, and texts, they find there.  (I wonder if the applications they use to determine the age of those subjects, like our sons and daughters who are doing dumb things, is good enough to make sure the wholesome folks at the NSA and CIA are not breaking even MORE laws. Just sayin’.)

Anyway, it looks like the impenetrable computer systems maintained by the Senate were accessed by the CIA.  For those of you that follow the news like I do I realize the Feinstein crew was up to their old tricks and ‘stole’ certain CIA memos which they were expressly forbidden to even copy.  But how do you threaten to leak damaging information and extort your ‘friends and colleagues’ without stealing it first?  Even so…

I must admit I’m enjoying some satisfaction knowing that those who have professed to think ‘it’s just fine’ that the Government is spying on its own citizens, cough…Feinstein…cough, are now experiencing exactly the treatment they viewed themselves above.

This story has seen very little coverage and I think I know why.  The story would be a short explanation followed by a single yelled exclamation of “How Does It Feel?!”.

In all honesty this should be a terrifying story, and it might be if we have not all been out here in regular working man territory trying to digest the fact we have absolutely no privacy left, and no protection from our own government, for the last two years.  I believe if this story about the CIA spying on the Senate Intelligence Committee were a stand alone event all eyes, and outrage, would be focused upon it.

This brings up an interesting phenomena.  Some years ago I assisted, in small ways, a professor friend with a paper on Mortality Salience.  Mortality Salience is how humans react to provided evidence that certain behaviors or actions either are or will be harmful to their life expectancy.  Part of what my friend was working on is the interesting reaction humans have when the information becomes so overwhelming in terms of either too many of their actions being life threatening, or a single action which is painted as immediately threaten in every way. The individual’s reaction is to tune out the warnings.  They simply become numb to the desired level of alarm those issuing the warnings are attempting to facilitate.

To make a long story longer, I think this is why nobody seems to care about our FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE SERVICE SPYING ON OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS…

AND… THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES DEFENDING THE ACTION.

What’s yet another ground shaking, unbelievable, constitution destroying event when we have been inundated with them for the last 5-years?

We have become numb to the fear and alarm which should rationally be present.

We are now Deer in Headlights.

So, smokem’ if you gotem’.  Eat more Bacon and Stop Wearing your Seatbelt… What the Hell?

Another part of it is that no matter how alarmed we are at the constant outrageous behavior, nobody ever gets held accountable and there is nothing that we can do about it. So we stop caring all together.

Astounding, isn’t it? I call it outrage fatigue. People have now become so numb to all the scandals and violations of all that is good and decent, that they simply tune it out.

“We have become numb to the fear and alarm which should rationally be present.”

I’m not sure how many of us are in that state? I see a whole lot of alarm and anxiety out there. Considering I live in the middle of liberal utopia, the fact that people are looking concerned, starts to give ME anxiety.
